Economic systems on another planet?

In Robert Heinlein's "The Moon is a harsh mistress", a libertarian capitalist system works because death comes so easily to greedy/dishonest tradesmen. On the other hand, in Kim Stanley Robinson's "Red Mars" trilogy, a collectivist system is the only workable one, since the harsh environment requires everyone to look out for the common good. What do you think? Personally, I'm far more an advocate of Kim Stanley Robinson's "Gift economy" than the pioneering romanticism of Heinlein. But what do you think? Economic paradigms would be vastly augmented, as the amount of arable land and breathable air would be so scarce on another world.
