Are groomsmen supposed to get the couple a present?

I have heard from several people that since we are paying for the tuxes, planning a bachelor party, and helping with the things on the day of, then we are not supposed to. I feel really uncomfortable about not getting a gift for my two friends who are getting married, what is the status quo on this?
